Questions & Answers

The celebrations

When and where is the wedding?
We are celebrating twice. The church wedding is on Sunday 18 July 2027 at Holy Trinity Cathedral (Kidist Selassie) in Addis Ababa. The reception and wedding ceremony follow on Saturday 24 July 2027 in Arba Minch, in southern Ethiopia.
Do I need to attend both?
We would love to see you at both, but we understand the trip is a big one. Please tell us on your RSVP which celebrations you can make.
What time do things start?
We will share the full schedule with times soon.
Why two cities?
Addis is home and the heart of our families. Arba Minch, between Lake Abaya and Lake Chamo, is where we want to dance with all of you under a clearer sky. The week in between is yours to explore.

Weather

What will the weather be like?
Pack for two climates. July is the heart of the rainy season in Addis, which sits at about 2,355 m (7,700 ft), so expect cool days, chilly nights and rain most days. Arba Minch is lower, warmer and far drier, with mild days and only occasional light showers.

Addis Ababa

Daytime about 20°C (68°F). Nights 11 to 13°C (52 to 55°F). Rain on most days, often heavy in the afternoon and evening.

Arba Minch

Daytime 22 to 24°C (72 to 75°F). Nights about 15°C (59°F). Mostly dry, often cloudy, light showers possible.

These are July averages from historical climate data. Check the forecast again the week before you fly.

What to wear

Is there a dress code for the church?
Holy Trinity is an Ethiopian Orthodox cathedral, so please dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered. Women are welcome to bring a scarf or netela to cover their hair. Traditional habesha kemis and suits are very welcome.
And for Arba Minch?
There are two ceremonies in Arba Minch, so pack two looks: cultural wear and cocktail attire. We will let you know which goes with which when we share the schedule. Evenings drop to around 15°C (59°F), so bring a light layer for after sunset.
Anything else to pack?
A compact umbrella and a warm jacket for Addis, comfortable shoes for uneven streets, sunscreen and insect repellent for Arba Minch.

Getting there

Do I need a visa?
Most international visitors do. Many nationalities can apply online through Ethiopia's official eVisa portal at evisa.gov.et. Requirements change, so check for your passport well before you book.
Which airport do I fly into?
Addis Ababa Bole International Airport (ADD), the hub for Ethiopian Airlines.
How do I get from Addis to Arba Minch?
The easiest way is a domestic flight to Arba Minch Airport (AMH), about an hour in the air. By road it is roughly 500 km, a full day's drive with beautiful Rift Valley views. Domestic flights are limited, so please book early, and ask Ethiopian Airlines about domestic fares linked to your international ticket.
When should I arrive?
If you are joining the church wedding, plan to be in Addis before Sunday 18 July. For the celebrations in Arba Minch, please arrive by Friday 23 July or Saturday morning, 24 July.

Accommodation

Where should I stay in Arba Minch?
We are arranging special rates with a few selected hotels and resorts in Arba Minch. Details and booking links will be shared here as soon as they are confirmed, so hold off on booking for now.

Things to do in Addis Ababa

What is there to do in Addis?
Plenty, whatever your pace. The city has a lively nightlife with jazz bars and live Ethiopian music, a deep spiritual side with historic churches and the Entoto hills above town, excellent food from traditional injera spots to coffee ceremonies, and shopping that runs from Merkato, one of Africa's biggest open air markets, to local designers. The National Museum, home of the famous fossil Lucy, is worth an afternoon.
First time in Addis?
Tell us on your RSVP and we will send you our personal list of favourite places to eat, drink, pray, shop and dance.

Things to do in Arba Minch

What should I see while I'm there?

Arba Minch means "forty springs" in Amharic, and it sits between two Rift Valley lakes. If you have a free day before or after the celebration, these are the five most loved experiences.

  1. 1.Dorze Village

A highland village about 18 km away, known for tall bamboo beehive houses and master weavers. Try kocho bread and watch the weaving; it is cooler up there, so bring a layer.

  2. 2.Nechisar National Park

The park between the two lakes, with zebras, antelope and the "Bridge of God" ridge. The ridge views are best at sunrise or sunset.

  3. 3.Lake Chamo boat trip

A boat cruise to see hippos, birdlife and the huge Nile crocodiles of the "Crocodile Market." The town's classic half day trip; book through a local guide.

  4. 4.Crocodile Ranch

A farm near Lake Abaya raising Nile crocodiles from hatchlings to giants. Easy to pair with the Lake Chamo trip.

  5. 5.Forty Springs

The forested springs that give the town its name, inside the park entrance. A short, shaded walk.

Good to know

What currency is used?
The Ethiopian birr. Cards work at larger hotels and some restaurants in Addis, but carry cash for markets, taxis and most of Arba Minch. ATMs are easy to find in Addis.
Will my phone work?
Roaming can be pricey. A local SIM from Ethio Telecom or Safaricom Ethiopia is cheap and easy to set up with your passport.
Any health tips?
Addis is high up, so take your first day slowly, drink plenty of water and go easy on alcohol. Arba Minch is lowland, so please visit a travel clinic before the trip to ask about vaccinations and malaria prevention.
What time zone is Ethiopia in?
East Africa Time, UTC+3. Fun fact: Ethiopia has its own calendar, so in Ethiopia our wedding falls in the month of Hamle, 2019.
